ASHA is a health activist in the community who creates awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilizes the community towards public health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services.

She is the base of NHM pyramid and is looked at as catalyst in Health Sector reform. National health mission is looking at ASHA as a first contact in community and capable enough to deal with religious, social, cultural, economic variations.


To develop the first port of call within the community for any health related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children, who find it difficult to access health services.
